Building sustainable human resource: Human resource is the foundation of effective efficient and quality service delivery. Sustainable health facility based service delivery is supported through pre and in-service health professional provider training. LVCT aims to augment in-service training while providing the structures, systems and training for building sustainable human resource for community HIV services such as static, mobile, workplace and home-based VCT, home based care, client follow up and retention in treatment, adherence counseling and supported disclosure.
Building sustainable human resource for community HIV services: HTC provider training by LVCT is aimed at increasing the number of personnel able to provide quality HIV testing and counseling services in community HIV testing and counseling includes static, mobile, workplace and home-based VCT and for provider initiated HTC. LVCT has trained 75% of Kenya’s 6,000 VCT counselors and HTC providers and 90% of HIV counsellor supervisors. LVCT continues to provide training through direct training at the LVCT training centre and through partnership with HTC service delivery organizations. 85% of LVCT trained HTC providers are providing direct services.
LVCT’s Diploma Course in HIV Counseling and Testing in Clinical and Community Settings aims to offer a career development path to approximately 3000 VCT counsellors trained in Kenya today. So far 83 students are enrolled in the program with 48 already completed their training and awaiting graduation this year.
Building sustainable human resources for facility based services: LVCT augments in-service training through courses that institutionalize care and treatment including courses on; ART & opportunistic infection management, TB/HIV integration and adherence counseling training having trained over 250 clinicians and nurses.
Building sustainable human resource to respond to vulnerabilities and risk: While responses to vulnerable groups and most at risk populations are on-going LVCT has continued to provide sensitivity and specialized training. Clinicians and laboratory personnel are trained in management of rape, and counselors offer support for trauma and care through courses on the clinical management of rape/sexual violence and counseling for trauma following rape. MSM sensitivity training sensitizes health workers and counselors on the sexual and reproductive needs of men who have sex with men providing information and skills for effective responses.
Additional courses that provide skills for training providers and monitoring service delivery include: training of trainers for quality assurance, HIV related courses and laboratory technologist for CT courses and a counselor supervision training.
