Developing capacities for the HIV response

LVCT has demonstrated that support to local organizations by funding partners can result in national level strong and capable organizations offering leadership, being cognizant of Kenya’s environment and with minimal administrative costs.

Developing capacities of indigenous organizations: LVCT works with sub-partners, mainly community based organizations (CBOs), faith-based organizations (FBOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and peer-led most-at-risk-populations organizations. This work entails strengthening the systems of the organizations in areas such as governance, administration, human resources management, financial management, organizational management and program management. This is done by using our experience at LVCT through a robust, replicable capacity development model, that emphasizes mentorship. Mutually defined outcomes for growth are measured annually in addition to the evaluation of achievement of programme results, which have exhibited sustainability.

At service delivery level, of the roughly 1,000 VCT sites in Kenya, LVCT has helped to establish over 500, ‘graduating’ 98% of these to be managed by GoK, and other Civil Society Organizations (CSO).

At organizational level, LVCT has provided sub-granting, mentorship and growth to 48 organizations, graduating 16 of these, 4 of which have grown into leadership organizations for HIV advocacy and services delivery. LVCT’s current sub-granting portfolio is approximately 1,000,000 US$ for 43 sub-partners, provided through a transparent sub-granting process.

Developing capacities for engagement with vulnerabilities: At LVCT we utilize our expertise gained from working with vulnerable populations and responding to HIV vulnerabilities. These include the youth, people with disability (PWD), men who have sex with men (MSM), survivors of sexual violence as well as male and female sex workers. LVCT integrates gender concerns in its programs, and supports all its partners to do the same, recognizing the role of gender plays in accelerating new infections.
