Introduction
Liverpool VCT, Care & Treatment has been offering various short courses in HIV related areas since 1998. Due to the high demand of a cadre of counselors within the clinical settings the training has been scaled up to provide more competent counselors who can deliver higher quality services within the clinical settings. Diploma in HIV counseling and testing in clinical settings is designed to provide health care workers with more training that will enable them offer quality HIV counseling & testing services and provide psychological support to a wide range of clients.
Programme Objective
The main objective of the programme is to train and improve knowledge, skills and attitudes of health care workers to be able to offer comprehensive HIV and AIDS services in clinical settings.
Programme Design
The programme offers a dynamic curriculum, designed to prepare health care workers to provide services in a broad range of mental health settings. Graduates will be highly skilled in counseling with specialized training in eclectic model of therapy.
The program blends classroom facilitation, practical experience, and research skills to provide participants with the best education possible. We emphasize the importance of creating a personalized learning experience for each participant with individualized attention and mentorship from faculty members who are experts in their field.
The programme integrates practical assignments with interactive sessions. The course is structured to take one and a half years which is divided into seven terms. In each term the participants meet for two weeks where they physically attend facilitated sessions. This is then followed by ten weeks break when the participants engage in personal study of the course work and assignments with the support of their tutors. The program employs a developmental training approach, where expectations of minimum competency gradually increase as participants proceed through the sequence of coursework, supervised clinical practice and the completion of other requirements.
Supervision
Individual Clinical Supervision: participants are scheduled for supervision within clinical settings for a minimum of eight hours. The supervisor supports the participant in: enhancing counseling & testing skills, promoting professional growth, and evaluating participants' progress by giving regular feedback.
Group Supervision: Group supervision is an integral part of the training program at Liverpoolvct, Care & Treatment Training Institute. Participants are expected to attend group supervision one Saturday per month where emphasis is placed on experiential learning. Participants are allowed the opportunity to discuss their client caseload and dialogue about such issues like case conceptualization, transference, countertransference issues, appropriate boundaries, dual relationships, professional conduct, as well as legal and ethical considerations. Sharing of audio and video tapes with other participants for the purpose of training and peer support is encouraged. This opportunity allows participants to give feedback to others about their work and is an important aspect of the learning process.

Cost of the training
The Tuition fee is Ksh 128,000. This caters for facilitation, practical work, library access and course related journals. Payment can be made in full or in installments.
Admission requirements
- Minimum KCSE grade C
- Certificate in VCT or general counseling
- At least 3 years work experience in health related field
- Competence in both spoken and written English
